Celebrate National Recovery Month 2013 – People Do Recover!

Prevention Works – Treatment Is Effective – People Recover

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Recovery Month 2013 offers a simple, but strong message:

Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

Yes, September is National Recovery Month and this will be the 24th year that SAMHSA has reached out to the recovery community and beyond to share the message of recovery and to praise those in recovery, those seeking recovery and the many people that work in the field of intervention and recovery treatment.

Together on the Pathways to Wellness

This year SAMHSA has outlined defined pathways to wellness and eight dimensions to wellness.

  • Emotional: Coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships;
  • Environmental: Achieving good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being;
  • Financial: Feeling satisfaction with current and future financial situations;
  • Intellectual: Recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills;
  • Occupational: Obtaining personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work;
  • Physical: Recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep;
  • Social: Developing a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system; and
  • Spiritual: Expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life.
